Healthy Teeth, Happy Dogs: Luna the Dental Vets Comes to Tetbury for Our Rescue Dogs

A dental health care day for rescue dogs at The Tetbury Pet Shop & Grooming

Freshly groomed coats are one thing (see blog here) but wellbeing for a rescue dog goes a lot deeper than surface fluff. So when Joe from Luna Dental offered to come to Tetbury as part of our pamper day for the rescue dogs - we were over the moon!

Why dental health matters so much for rescue dogs

Dental health is one of the most overlooked parts of a dog's (and human's) wellbeing, and it's an area rescue dogs are especially likely to be behind on. Dogs coming from difficult starts, strays, or homes where day-to-day care wasn't a priority often arrive at shelters with plaque, tartar build-up, sore gums or teeth that have never been properly checked.

Left untreated, dental disease isn't just about bad breath — it can mean real pain for the dog, difficulty eating, and in more advanced cases, bacteria from the mouth affecting other organs like the heart and kidneys. It's a big deal, and it's exactly why having a dental expert like Joe check over each dog properly makes such a difference.

What Joe from Luna Dental got up to

Joe spent the day carefully checking over each rescue dog's mouth — gums, teeth, and any signs of discomfort — and carrying out treatment where it was needed. For dogs who may never have had a proper dental check in their lives, having a specialist take the time to look after their teeth is a genuinely big step toward a happier, healthier future.

Luna the Dental Vets are a UK dental-only veterinary practice, built entirely around making high-quality, affordable dental care accessible for dogs and cats. It's exactly the kind of specialist knowledge that shelters and rescue dogs don't always get easy access to, so having Joe give up his time for our rescue visitors meant a lot.

Small check-ups, big difference

It's easy to focus on the visible transformations — a matted coat turned fluffy, a nervous dog turned relaxed — but a proper dental check-up is just as important to a rescue dog's long-term health and comfort, even if it's not something you can see in a photo. Catching problems early means less pain for the dog and a much better chance of a smooth, healthy start in their new home.

Thank you, Joe

A big thank you to Joe and the team at Luna the Dental Vets for giving up their time and expertise for our rescue dogs. It's this kind of support from local specialists that makes such a genuine difference to dogs who need it most, and we're proud to have people like Joe part of our Tetbury dog-loving community.

More from the rescue days

This dental day was part of a wider effort to support local rescue dogs, alongside their grooming makeovers and the toys, blankets, food and treats donated by our customers and brands like Green & Wilds, Beco and Pet Wiz. You can read more here:
