Local walks in and around Tetbury
Share
Nairobi and I spend a lot of time walking so we thought we would share some of our favourite walks with you. The perfect guide whether you're visiting Tetbury for the day with your four legged companion or live here!
Number One: The Goods Shed & Preston Park
A lovely dog friendly tree lined path that has it all! This is a gravel path with a stream running alongside it and a large hilled park called Preston Park in the middle of it. Perfect for family walks as it is mostly flat and has varying routes and lengths available. If you walk the entire path length you will come to The Trouble House pub, offering amazing food and a cheeky drink stop. This pub has a garden and is very dog friendly. An 8mile loop is also available at the end of this path that takes you up and through the small village of Ashley, before bringing you along Monarch's Way, and back into town past the Tetbury Hospital.
Length: 40min loop through Preston Park, 1hr to The Trouble House, approx. 3hrs for the 8mile loop
Dogs: High chance, you will see other dogs on the shorter route of this walk.
Livestock & Nature: Cows in Preston Park in summer, this area is fenced off. Rabbits from Spring onwards. Sheep may be present if you do the 8mile loop as this does go through farmland.
Mud Scale: Low
Poo Bins: There are plenty of waste bins on the first section of this walk.
Parking: The Goods Shed has a large car park that is free year round.
Places to eat or drink:
The Goods Shed Cafe open Wed-Sun 10-4
The Trouble House Pub open Tues-Sun 10-3:30 https://www.thetroublehouse.co.uk/
Number Two: Estcourt Estate
Our favourite walk in Tetbury as this estate has many footpath options and is really well kept. Owned by Juddmonte Group, the longer walk to the Cat & Custard Pot pub will take you through maintained paddocks that are home to some of the best race horses in the world. The shortest loop is easy to follow, taking about 25minutes, you join the footpath just after the Bath Road bridge and follow the fenced path. Taking you past livestock and through a woodland area, this path can join up with the Goods Shed walk also. A longer loop of about 45mins takes you down to the river, through arable farmland and pops you out further up the Bath Road. There is pavement to walk along back into Tetbury from here. On a warm day I'd recommend the longer walk to The Cat & Custard Pot Inn, it's one of the best pubs around and makes a gorgeous day out with your dog!
Length: 25min loop easy fenced path, 45min longer loop with river, 1hr walk to Cat & Custard Pot Inn
Dogs: Farely common on shorter routes
Livestock & Wildlife: Sheep and Cows in places on all routes throughout the year. Horses on Cat & Custard Pot route as well as pigs. There is a group of 5 deer that live on the estate that we sometimes see but this is rare.
Mud Scale: High, the shorter paths are well used so this can get very muddy during winter.
Poo Bins: None available after Bath Road bridge entrance
Parking: Old Brewery Lane Car Park
Places to eat or drink: The Cat & Custard Pot Inn open daily 12-9, Traditional pub or Pizza Chalet http://catandcustard.co.uk/
Number Three: Chavenage Woods & House
A walk we have recently found and absolutely love is a mostly green lane walk to Chavenage Woods. You can take this walk further and walk all the way to Chavenage House that come May 2024, will reopen it's community space and cafe. You can start this walk from the high street, joining Chavenage lane and taking a small path at the end of Newleaze Gardens into a large field. This will join you onto a green lane that I have never come across cars whilst walking along, this then joins you to Chavenage lane and you can drop straight into the woods. From here you could continue onto Chavenage house for a refresher from May onwards!
Length: 1hr loop from high street to woods, 50min one way to Chavenage
Dogs: Rare
Livestock & Wildlife: Sheep in fields along green lane.
Mud Scale: Low, can get boggy at the bottom of the field by Newleaze Gardens
Poo Bins: Along Chavenage Lane closer to Tetbury
Parking: The Recreational Ground car park or any car park in Tetbury
Places to eat or drink: The Barn at Chavenage
Number Four: Longfurlong Lane to Westonbirt
A lovely walk that passes alongside the very famous Highgrove House, you don't get to see it, just letting you know that now before you get disappointed! You can start this at the Brewery Lane Car park and head down to the Ford before linking up with Longfurlong Lane. There is a large field here that you can dip into for a shorter walk, although the farmer has expressed you must stick to the footpath here. Otherwise walk to the end of the lane until you reach the entrance to Highgrove land, here you head straight on through open fields and some farmland until you reach the Hare and Hounds. They are dog friendly and have a wonderful garden to sit in for a break, there is even a dog wash! This walk can continue either through Westonbirt School or Beaufort Polo Club land. For a really long summer walk, you can walk from here to The Cat & Custard Pot Inn, looping back into Tetbury some hours later!
Length: 40mins to Longfurlong field and back, 90mins to The Hare and Hounds, 3hrs longer loop
Dogs: Rare
Livestock & Wildlife: Rabbits in Longfurlong field. Sheep and Cows on farmland in walk to Hare and Hounds. Horses at Westonbirt School and Beaufort Polo Club as well as further along the route to Cat & Custard Pot.
Mud Scale: Low
Danger: If you do take the longer route to Cat & Custard Pot Inn be aware of electric fences on farmland between here and Westonbirt School.
Poo Bins: None for the entire walk
Parking: Old Brewery Lane Car Park
Places to eat or drink: The Hare and Hounds open daily 12-9, you must have a booking to eat here.
The Cat & Custard Pot Inn open daily 12-9, Traditional Pub or Pizza Chalet
Number Five: SWR School to Lowfield Farm
A green lane walk that goes past SWR and takes you into farmland surrounding Lowfield Farm. This is a really lovely walk that's easy, flat and open at points. It's a short walk that goes through a wooded lane with small bodies of water along the way, be careful in summer as these can become boggy! The lane will bring you out into some large arable fields that you can loop back round to the lane on. To make this walk much longer you can take a left through the front of Lowfield Farm and follow the footpath signs to Chavenage House and back to Tetbury. Nairobi and I have done this walk once but we got very lost so I recommend using a map or app such as AllTrails! A great short walk otherwise for rainier days and mud avoidance.
Length: 40mins to end of lane and back, 3hrs+ longer walks to Chavenage
Dogs: Likely
Livestock & Wildlife: Sheep and Horses at Lowfield Farm, all in enclosed areas. Squirrels in the trees lining the lane.
Mudscale: Low if sticking to green lane, can get very muddy in fields beyond
Poo Bins: None
Parking: On street parking in housing area before SWR
Places to eat or drink: The Barn at Chavenage if doing the longer walk
We hope you enjoyed reading through some of our favourite walks in and around Tetbury. I used to get lost A LOT on walks when trying to find my way around, if this happens to you too, I've found an app called All Trails which is amazing for showing you public footpaths.
Nairobi and I look forward to meeting you on one of these walks soon! Any questions pop into the shop and we will be more than happy to help.
